Toxic Living

 By spraying pesticides and fertilizers on plants, our soil, water, and air has become extremely polluted. Harvested plants, fruits and vegetables, expose us to thousands of toxins each and every day. Even if the fruits and vegetables are properly washed there are still some amounts of toxins in the plant matter itself, we then ingest these toxins into our systems. The air we breathe is being polluted by driving cars and trucks; burning coal, oil, and other fossil fuels; and manufacturing chemicals. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the average adult breathes over 3,000 gallons of air every day. Children breathe even more air per pound of body weight and are more susceptible to air pollution.

Materials we handle every day leach out harmful chemicals and toxins and are being introduced into our system every time we touch something.

Millions of people live in areas where urban smog, very small particles, and toxic pollutants pose serious health concerns. Vehicle exhaust contributes roughly 60 percent of all carbon monoxide emissions nationwide, and up to 95 percent in cities. Studies show that fire-retardant chemicals known as polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDE’s), which are used in the manufacture of computers, televisions, toasters, and furniture and have been found in house dust, human tissues and they directly interfere with neuron function and may even invade brain cells.

 PCB’s are chemicals that were originally used as insulating and cooling fluids for electronics and caulk. They were outlawed after being linked to thyroid problems and decreased function of the endocrine, immune, nervous, and reproductive systems. In addition they were linked to breast and other forms of cancer. Despite the fact that they were banned more than 30 years ago, scientists are still reporting detectable levels of PBC’s in water, soil sediments and municipal sludge (sometimes used as fertilizers on farmers fields). Dr. David Pimentel, Professor of Entomology and Agricultural Science, has reported that 65% of the pesticides used in the United States are applied by aircraft and 50 to 75% of this amount ends up in the environment generally, with only 25% attacking the intended target.

So, it is easy to see the toxic formula here.  Pollution has spread to 90% of our water, and contamination creates acid rain even in remote and once beautifully pure lakes.  Along with artificially doctoring the soil, we have developed powerful pesticides to doctor our plants. With this we are poisoning ourselves and our future generations. It is almost impossible to not come into some type of contact with environmental toxins.

From digestive care and nutrition expert Brenda Watson’s book,  The Detox Strategy: Vibrant Health in 5 Easy Steps, “every citizen of an industrialized nation now carries an average of seven hundred synthetic chemicals in his or her body from food, water, and air – most of which have not been well studied.”

A quote from Carl Lowe’s article, Bowled Over by Toxins featured in Essential Health Magazine, “This prolonged exposure to toxins is a particular problem for baby boomers, who carry around 15 pounds of stored toxins – the equivalent of toting around a 15-pound bowling ball of toxic waste.

 When you stop to think about these statements it is very disturbing knowing we have pounds of toxic chemicals and debris floating around our bloodstream and tissues, affecting every vital organ in our bodies.  Most doctors believe that the substantial increase in human toxicity could account for the epidemic numbers of allergy sufferers, fibromyalgia patients, chronic fatigue, nervous system disorders, migraine headaches, ADD, depression, anxiety and many other common modern ailments.

So where do we go from here?

 It is recommended by nutritionists, holistic health care practitioners and others in the alternative health care field that we periodically  detoxify our bodies. There are many products out on the market to help cleanse and detoxify, you can start by modifying your diet. However, before you make any drastic diet changes and become a vegetarian; I would first recommend consulting with a certified dietician or your medical doctor. Food, exercise and drinking plenty of clean water all seem to play an important part in helping the body rid itself of accumulated toxins.

and my mother;

Nowadays it is essential that we detox our bodies.  It is no longer a frivolous luxury.  We need to do whatever we need to do to rid ourselves of these toxic intruders.  We cannot depend on our own immune systems to protect us anymore, since the immune system is overworked and  compromised.  Naturopathic doctors suggest we detox regularly.  Some people detox weekly.  I try to detox monthly, others spring and fall.  There are internal and external detox procedures and products to use.  Yes, Arbonne can supply you with both as well as directions to follow to detox in your own home.

Arbonne's Seasource Detox Spa helps you to stimulate the skin's surface to help remove trapped toxins and encourage natural purification, detoxification and re-mineralization.  Products strengthen the skin's surface and hair by providing vitamins, trace minerals and beneficial marine plant extracts that help hydrate and nourish skin's moisture barrier.  Next the body is supported to an optimal state of health, beauty and sense of well-being achieved by enhancing the body's natural ability to fortify, protect and oxygenate itself.  Finally the body experiences a cleansing beverage of detoxifying botanical in an internal body cleanse treatment.  Wash away external and internal toxins that come to us through the air we breathe, the water we drink, the things we touch, and the food we eat.  Today, detoxification is a vital element of radiant health, beauty and overall sense of well-being.
